I always wondered why coffee shops in particular were a popular spot for art students, and this sort of answered it for me. Coffee's a good beverage when you're cramming and tired (and art students LOVE to stay up late), chill setup for computer work, everyone's already looking out the window for your still life sketches.. Yeah, seems like a great place for an art student, now that I really think about it!
Discounting that, the way you talk is really well suited for narrating these types of casual stories. You get right to the point, but it's very easy to absorb it all. As if you could trail off for a minute, but it still feels like part of the story you're telling. I'm not a big fan of storytime type stuff at all, but this feels like just talking about things most people can relate to or go through, without going for the low hanging fruit and focusing on the bad to get a cheap laugh or a"#relatable" response, like a lot of webcomics and storytime things tend to do now more than ever. That takes some form of skill, and I appreciate that.

Raziberry responds:

Hey thanks a lot! When I started doing these, I'd never even heard of "storytime youtubers", and the genre may not have existed yet, but either way I'm happy to know you don't think I blend into the crowd.

The surreal music and sound design made me feel like something was in the room with me the entire time I was watching. It's a great score for a horror short, did you make it yourself or use stock stuff?
Besides that, I really liked the imagery of Cera shoving entertainment and various forms of media into her fragments to try and pacify it, or cover it up. I have a feeling it's meant to signify when certain people are breaking down, and use things like music, literature or video games to distract themselves from the pain.
If I had to get any meaning from the unnerving ending, it'd be that the entertainment isn't helping. She can't hide from the thing that's making her crack and break down, and it spirals, taking over her entire body, leading to a LITERAL breakdown. Related to Cera, I enjoy her look a lot. The spiky black hair almost reminds me of Don't Starve, but the entire look of this short feels unique and not really comparable to anything as a whole. The coloring itself gives me weird dreadful feelings, I have no rational explanation as to why.
I really enjoyed this! You've already got an extensive amount of work put up on here and your work has changed as you've improved, so no need to tell you to keep posting. Keep making what you're making, I really appreciate it.
(That Yume Nikki poster is also appreciated, by the way.)

AntonM responds:

Super kind of you thanks!

Yeah I made all the sounds effects and music! I record a bunch of stuff in my house, it's a little bit more time consuming but you can get some really nice unique and weird sounds

And good eye for that poster, there are three others that reference things, I wonder if it's a little too dark to see them lol

Usage of photorealism isn't unusual on NG, but the way you use it has to be one of the most unique ways I've seen it used! It's hard to animate fluidly with the limitations of using actual people with realistic-looking limbs/skin and some slight edits, but the writing and surreal vibe it gives off makes up for the more limited animation. The style you went with compliments it, in a weird way. Also a fan of this being tagged as "tri-state-cartwheel-champion", looks like Sal had her work cut out for her!
I'm new to this series (got here off of the daily awards), so I have a lot of catching up to do.

Furious-Monkey responds:

This style developed because I know zilch about traditional animation. I knew the basics of photoshop and After Effects looked like photoshop with a timeline, so I jumped in and started making stuff. I was going to make a fast, 'bad meme' style animation with rough cut-outs and dumb character movements---you can kind of see this attitude in some of the early episodes. (My apologies in advance). But I have a 'try-hard' personality, so I kept trying new things and spending more and more time on each episode. I'm happy with how the last 10 or so episodes look. But I still wonder if a "shit-post meme" style animation would have been better. I do know that this kind of animation won't be liked by everyone, so I really appreciate it when I get a comment like yours!
Thanks man!

The art style looks really distinctive, and the background's real well made! I really appreciate that picture of Barbatos in the background there. You can tell this chick's a real robot nerd, probably marathoned Pacific Rim loads of times! The lighting making the room all black and white before it goes back to normal is also a really cool visual.
If I had to name some flaws, I'd say that the sound could be better. The sparkly sound when the girl gets a eureka ends a little too abruptly before she starts doing the scientist laugh. Also, the gesture she does with her left hand when the loop restarts is odd. I think it'd be better if she tried to do that type of gesture with the robotic hand, before it starts sparking up and she has to repeat it again, getting way too ahead of herself. I'm no authority on what artists are allowed to do at all, though, just a suggestion!
I think this loop alone is a really intriguing premise, and I'd love to see it expand into something bigger. I could see that girl carting around her mecha plans all around town, trying to make a name for herself, or the total opposite, like a Dexter's Lab scenario. Either way, I'd love to see more!

BoyPorcelain responds:

Thank you, very well thought out review which i really respect. So first off thank you.
Again, thanks for the kind words, appreciate that, sound design i'll make sure to keep more in mind in future, i think my computer just starts to slow down too much when i edit sound on it so there were parts i had to skim over...
But the hand's starting point is fair, i wasn't thinking that far ahead when i animated this.

Glad you like it though, i might try and animate her again later this year, but that is what i have in mind for the character, quite literally a mixture of the two you said. A typical out of touch teenager dealing with her problems by creating giant mechs, trashing her problems and then dealing with her smashed problems.

Thanks for the review!

Happy Robot Day! This is one of my favorite days as well. There's limitless potential with robots.
Onto the review.
I love the gentleman robot's design. The metallic mustache, the monocle, the bow tie- even the tux. It's everything you brew up in your mind of when you think "rich gentleman", except maybe with a top hat added on. The voice fit him like a glove.
The little candlelight looks nice. It's not stationary, but it's not exaggerated, wildly moving around like it's about to spill all over the table and light it on fire. It's exactly how a real candlelight would look. For a two week project, that's something I would expect someone to not spot, no matter their level of skill.
If I had any suggestions at all, it would've been to put oil in the drinking glasses, just as a little detail.
This is a well done first attempt, congrats on the frontpage!

WooleyWorld responds:

We were going to try to put liquid in the glasses but I only had like one night left and had to start rendering so fuuuuckkk it.
Lol. Glad you liked it. Thanks for the review.

This is the cutest Mom's Day animation I've seen in a while. The visuals, the sound effects, and the music really came together.
How did your mom respond to this?

antdung responds:

Thanks a lot! She cried (happy tears ^_^) and said she loved it.

For a first-time animation, this is actually very good.
Everything about the style in this little animation was perfect; the little trees, the colors, and even the music. But the fire- oh MAN, the fire- it made this animation.
Good job.

ZeTrystan responds:

I'm surprised so many actually precisely like the fire! o: I though it wasn't very good, at first, haha.

Anyway, thanks a lot!

Sometimes, waiting really does pay off.
Best of luck to you in the completion of this, chluaid. We're all rooting for ya!

chluaid responds:

cheers cheerious!! :D

Every Madness Day, there's always those one or two, and sometimes three, animations that stand out from the rest.
From the rest of the of the cookie cutter plots and animations.
The ones that deviate from the typical Madness animation (not to say this is always a good thing no matter what; sometimes it works better with the same style), and are drawn frame by frame. The ones that look good even if they are hustled a bit, and rough around the edges; sometimes, it works better when it's got that sketch-like look to it.
The ones that absolutely deserve it's spot on 1st place, if it ends up getting it.
This was that animation for 2008, and it still looks like it owns that 1st place ribbon to this day.
This is about eight years late, but I don't care; congratulations have no expiration date.
Absolutely wonderful.

MindChamber responds:

thanks so much for that review! I sincerely appreciate it, :)

Nice to have ya.
